About Volt and Volt's programme:

In a time of great political tensions, a group of Europeans from all walks of life decided it was time to stand up for what they believed in. It was time to act; Volt was born. We came together to fight for a better society, to express our commitment towards cooperation, and to outline our belief in a shared future. Ours is a message of hope, of courage, and of solidarity. A message for all to see that divisions will not tear down what our parents have built. Volt was created to re-energise Europe and to solve the issues we all have in common. Volt offers Europeans a new vision for Europe, one that embraces the EU’s common aspirations and that faces its shortcomings head-on. Today, Volt is running for the European Parliament, to bring new energy to politics and to shape the Europe we all need. A Europe based on a strong political Union, where risks are shared, where benefits reach all Europeans, and where every person has a voice. A Union that shall be fixed. A Europe with a robust economy that provides opportunities for all, now and for generations to come. A Union that is an economic powerhouse. A Europe that takes care of its people, where children enjoy a cleaner environment, where migration flows are managed together, and where rights are guaranteed and responsibilities shared. A truly progressive Union. Unprecedented in European history, Volt will campaign for the European elections on a single, common platform: the Amsterdam Declaration. A platform which is both visionary and realistic. Volt wants to ensure that it delivers on its promises, while settling for nothing less than a new and improved Europe. The programme details what Volt aims to achieve in the European Parliament, and is supported by a longer document explaining in more details what we will do and how we will do it. Volt has ensured that all of its commitments can be worked upon in the European Parliament.

Now the moment of truth has come. Volt Belgium is running for the Europeon Elections of the 26th of May 2019. I have the honour to be the head of list. With our team we are very motivated to win the hearts and minds of many progressives in Flanders and Brussels who believe in a stronger, more democratic, sustainable and social Europe. To do this we need your support. Thanks for any donation. We will spend your money on a positive, constructive and eco-friendly campaign.

About Christophe Calis:

Christophe Calis was born in Ypres (Belgium), in 1971 (age 47). He grew up in Zonnebeke, a small village in the centre of the Ypres Salient, where the human suffering caused by World War I is still very tangible. This left a deep impression on him.

Together with his girlfriend he is now living in Brussels and he is the proud father of two kids. After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in engineering he studied moral philosophy (BA + MA) at the University of Ghent. Most of his professional career has kept Christophe Calis involved in the education sector. After being a teacher in ethics and cultural sciences for almost ten years he is now working as an educational advisor for the Flemish government. His main fields of expertise are in citizen education, democratic culture and sustainability. He also worked as a protection officer for the Belgian Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons. In addition, composing and playing music is a huge passion of him. In 2017 he composed the music for the documentary “Nothing is forgiven”, which tells the story of how Zineb El Rhazoui, a Moroccan activist and journalist, became a survivor of the Charlie Hebdo Attack in Paris.

He always was a committed and active citizen, but felt politically homeless. Observing the direction European and global politics is going he didn’t want to be a silent bystander. He went on the lookout for a positive and constructive project to which he could contribute. In the summer of 2018 he came across Volt. Getting to know Volt and the people behind the Brussels team felt like a homecoming. He took his first steps in politics with absolute enthusiasm.

Christophe is convinced that the challenges humanity is facing in the 21st century are transcending borders to the extent that we can only tackle them from an international perspective. Europe must be a the forefront in this. Europeans must speak up on the world stage with one democratic voice. In doing so, we must continue to take a stand for our values such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, and solidarity. He is committed to always putting education first and foremost, and fostering a truly democratic society by ensuring citizens are empowered and heard, along with creating a sustainable and just future for his children and all future generations.

His personal baseline is: “Europe will progress and no one will be left behind.”
